REPORT LAUNCH
We are launching UNDP’s new report “Towards a Green Transition of the Energy Sector in Ukraine” at Arendalsuka 2023. The new report reveals that the Ukrainian energy system remains extremely vulnerable. It continues to operate in emergency mode, as power generation capacity has been reduced by 61 percent of its pre-2022 levels. Moreover, manoeuvring capacity in the system has decreased by 68 percent, while available hydro generation capacity has decreased 29 percent. On the whole, damage to the energy system is estimated to cost more than $10 billion.
Norway is an energy nation with extensive knowledge within the field of energy through academia and industry, private sector and public authorities. Norway has also promised Ukraine large humanitarian and development funds through the Nansen programme. UNDP is assisting the Ukrainian authorities on energy and has recently published a review on the extent of damage due to the war.
LIVE FROM KIYEV
For this event, we will be joined by Christophoros Politis and Myron Waslyk, live from Kiyev. Together with in-person panelists, they will debate what Norway should do – short-term and long-term – to support Ukraine in rebuiliding its valuable energy sector.
The panel consist of:
- Christophoros Politis, the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Ukraine, and former UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Tajikistan
- Christian Syse, Special representative for Ukraine, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Myron Waslyk, head of Rud Pedersen Public Affair’s Ukraine office, and former strategic communications advisor to the CEO of Naftogaz, Ukraine's largest state oil and gas company
- Jorun Nossum, head of the Nansen-programme, NORAD
- Magnus Johansen, Executive Vice President, EMERGY
The event will be moderated by Arvinn Gadgil, Director of UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance (Oslo Governance Centre).
